SK hynix Inc. shares rose over 2% in Friday premarket trading, as risk appetite improved and chip stocks drew buying support. Nasdaq futures gained 0.52%, while S&P 500 futures rose 0.32%.
The company is considering a large-scale manufacturing expansion in Japan, evaluating ways to boost chip capacity amid rising global demand.
Japan Plant Could Mark Major Regional Expansion
According to a Reuters report on Friday citing a Korean daily, SK hynix is weighing plans to build a new chip manufacturing plant in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, with a potential investment scale of tens of trillions of Korean won.
The proposed investment would extend SK hynix's production footprint to northeastern Japan, a region designated as one of the country's semiconductor industry hubs.
Per the report, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won recently visited the region. If SK hynix proceeds with the project, it would mark the Korean chipmaker's first large-scale semiconductor manufacturing investment in Japan.
