SoFi Technologies Inc. shares rose more than 3% on Tuesday, outperforming the largely flat financial sector, as the stock extended its rebound and reclaimed its short- and medium-term trend lines.
SoFi Technologies shares are pushing higher with strong momentum. Why is SOFI stock surging?
SoFi reclaims short-term trend line, but the 200-day moving average remains key
SoFi shares are trading above their 20-day moving average of $17.93, 50-day moving average of $17.75, and 100-day moving average of $17.29. This alignment keeps the near-term trend pointed upward, providing clear watch levels for dip buyers. The bigger test lies higher: the stock remains below its 200-day moving average of $20.40, a level that often exerts a "gravitational" pull on the stock until price can reclaim and hold it. Until then, even if the underlying trend is genuine, SoFi's rebound may feel volatile, as the broader market has not fully endorsed the stock's long-term trend.
Short-term momentum is improving. The MACD line is above the signal line, with a positive histogram, indicating that selling pressure is easing and the follow-through on the stock's latest advance is stronger than in prior pullbacks. However, the moving average picture remains mixed: the 20-day moving average above the 50-day moving average is a short-term bullish signal, but the death cross that appeared in March serves as a reminder that the long-term trend has not fully reset.
SoFi outperforms the financial sector, which lags
SoFi's performance stands out because the broader financial sector was nearly flat, down 0.03% on the day, creating a spread of more than 3 percentage points between the stock and its sector. This divergence typically points to stock-specific demand rather than a sector-wide move.
On a broader view, the financial sector has actually been strong recently, up 2.34% over the past 30 days and 13.20% over the past 90 days, but Tuesday's trading was not part of that broader push. This is a case of SoFi showing relative strength while other sectors hold at moderate levels, and if the stock continues to break through key levels with consistency, such a move could attract more buying interest.
Resistance is at $19, a round-number zone that often serves as a decision point for short-term traders. Support is at $15, a prior demand zone near the lower end of the stock's 52-week range, where buyers previously stepped in and defended the price.
