Spotify Technology S.A. is actively embracing the rise of AI agents, betting that integrations with OpenAI's ChatGPT, Meta Platforms, Inc.'s Muse, and other assistants will expand the reach of its music catalog without weakening its relationship with listeners.
Spotify Wants to Be Everywhere in the AI Agent Race
Spotify shares closed up 11.19% on Thursday at $583.66, as subscriber and monthly active user growth supported investor sentiment despite the company missing Wall Street estimates on both third-quarter earnings and revenue.
The stock was down about 0.39% in pre-market trading on Friday.
Co-CEO Gustav Söderström said on the earnings call that Spotify aims to be the go-to platform for AI agents to access licensed media, allowing users to access music, podcasts, and audiobooks through third-party assistants.
"We're everywhere," Söderström said, highlighting integrations with ChatGPT, Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses and Muse, as well as OpenAI's Dots.
The strategy lets users request personalized playlists or discover audio content through AI assistants, while Spotify's own systems handle recommendations and playback.
Söderström said the company is in an "exceptionally strong position" in the agentic AI era, as its subscription and advertising businesses continue to generate revenue even when listeners access Spotify in the background.
Spotify Sees AI Agents as a Business Opportunity
Spotify does not view AI assistants as competitors but instead aims to turn them into additional distribution channels.
The company has also integrated Anthropic's Claude and announced a partnership with Meta's Muse for personalized music discovery.
Söderström said the goal is to become "the media service you can use through any agent," converting the growth of AI assistants into a commercial advantage.
AI Integration Could Bring New Data and Privacy Issues
The strategy could also give Spotify deeper insight into listener preferences. Söderström said requests made through AI agents could reveal interests Spotify would not otherwise know about, describing the resulting feedback loop as a positive for the company.
He said Spotify will not share its proprietary user data with third-party agents. Instead, Spotify's own systems process requests and use available information to decide what to play.
Spotify is also developing AI-driven discovery tools and exploring paid features for AI-generated covers and remixes to strengthen its own platform alongside external integrations.
Spotify Misses on Third-Quarter Results
Spotify reported earnings per share of $2.85, below the analyst consensus estimate of $3.11. Revenue rose 16% year-over-year to €4.97 billion, slightly missing Wall Street's forecast of $5.73 billion.
For the fourth quarter, Spotify guided revenue of €5.2 billion, approximately $5.985 billion, below the analyst consensus of $6.010 billion. Edge Stock Rankings shows SPOT with a weak short-term price trend but positive medium- and long-term trends, while ranking in the 97th percentile for growth.
