President Donald Trump on Thursday called the Nepal-Tibet floods "terrible," saying the United States has contacted Nepal's leadership and pledged assistance. The confirmed death toll has climbed to 469, with nearly 1,000 people missing.

Trump said: "It's terrible. We've called Nepal and said we're willing to provide whatever help they need... We're sending supplies, we've spoken with the leadership to let them know we'll provide whatever is needed."

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi posted on X on Thursday calling the disaster a "heartbreaking tragedy," writing: "Our prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones across the Himalayan region, those still waiting for news, and the brave rescue workers laboring tirelessly to find survivors."

Deputy Secretary of State Alison Hooker said she spoke with Nepali Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal about search and rescue efforts, including locating missing American citizens. She said the State Department is "rapidly deploying $500,000 in assistance to affected communities," while the U.S. Embassy in Nepal is coordinating with local authorities to assist American citizens.

Risk of secondary disasters imminent

Nepal's tragedy follows Wednesday's glacial collapse, when rocks, ice, and debris surged into the Himalayan river system, destroying roads, bridges, and power stations.

At least 540 of the missing are foreign nationals.

Nepal's disaster management authority warned that water levels in a debris-blocked lake on the Bhotekoshi River are rising, with a potential breach.

Separately, Chinese state media reported that a lake blocked by a natural dam on the Tibetan side faces a high risk of dam failure. Citing the Ministry of Water Resources, reports said peak flow is expected around September 1.
