Trump's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods drew fierce Democratic opposition, with warnings that they will raise costs for American families, farmers, and businesses.

Democrats Slam Trump's 50% Canada Tariffs

On Saturday, Democrats criticized Trump's tariff policy as new tariffs took effect, arguing that higher import costs could ultimately be passed on to American consumers and businesses.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer blasted the move on X, saying: "Trump's chaotic trade war is squeezing Americans, and now he's coming back for more."

He added that the policy adds "another bill" to "hardworking American families," and said: "This ridiculous feud with Canada should never have taken effect. It must end immediately."

Trump's chaotic trade war is squeezing Americans, and now he's coming back for more.

Trump just added another bill to hardworking American families already crushed by his soaring costs.

This ridiculous feud with Canada should never have taken effect...

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg drew a broader comparison, writing that whether Trump is waging a "trade war with Canada or a real war with Iran," Americans are paying the price for the president's decisions.

Whether it's a trade war with Canada or a real war with Iran, the pattern is the same: Americans are paying the price for the president's choices.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called Canada "our closest ally" and "our key trading partner," then asked: "What the hell are we doing?"

Our closest ally. Our key trading partner.

What the hell are we doing?

Senator Patty Murray said the 50% tariffs mean higher costs for "American businesses" and "American families."

She added: "Tariffs are taxes we pay."

Let's be clear about who pays the 50% tariffs on Canada: American businesses. American families.

Costs are already too high because of Trump's wars and other tariffs—Trump just made them higher.

Tariffs are taxes we pay. Stop Trump's tariffs.

Senator Amy Klobuchar warned the tariffs could raise costs for "small businesses, farmers, and all Minnesota families."

The new Trump tariffs just took effect. Now it's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods.

That means higher costs for small businesses, farmers, and all Minnesota families.

Canada is Minnesota's number one trading partner. Minnesotans are paying the price for Trump's chaos.

US-Canada Tariff War Escalates

US–Canada trade talks collapsed before a midnight deadline, triggering Trump's 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods.

Prime Minister Mark Carney blamed Washington, saying "they demanded too much and offered too little," while US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said Canada sought additional concessions.

Carney said Canada will retaliate with "matching" tariffs starting September 8, targeting sectors including steel, dairy, electronics, and agricultural equipment.

He acknowledged the measures could raise costs for Canadians but said Ottawa will prioritize diversifying trade beyond the US.

Trump Tariffs Raise Energy Concerns

Earlier, Trump's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods escalated trade tensions, while Canadian crude oil remained exempt.

Canada supplies about 62% of US oil imports, making the exemption important for US energy security.

Carney called the tariffs a violation of the USMCA agreement.

The dispute comes as global oil markets face supply disruptions, with Brent crude briefly topping $100 per barrel, raising concerns that fuel prices could rise if energy trade is affected.
