US stock index futures edged lower early Monday as investors braced for a pivotal week featuring Nvidia's highly anticipated earnings report, key Federal Reserve speeches at Jackson Hole, and escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Polymarket traders are slightly bearish on the August 24 trading session. The "Will the S&P 500 be up or down on August 24?" contract currently reflects only a 45% probability of a positive open.
Why This Number Matters
Traders are weighing microeconomic resilience against escalating geopolitical and macroeconomic risks:
Futures Indices Lower: Stock index futures point to a negative open. S&P 500 futures fell 0.11%, while Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 0.35%. Dow Jones futures slipped 0.05%, and Russell 2000 futures held flat at 0.00%.
Geopolitical Escalation: The US has threatened an "Economic D-Day," preparing severe sanctions against Iran's trading partners. In retaliation, Iran has vowed to shut down all Persian Gulf oil exports if the economic war continues, per Reuters. Despite these serious threats, oil prices have pulled back; Brent crude futures shifted to the November contract, down 1.47% to $91.31 per barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude fell 1.64% to $85.63 per barrel.
Tech Earnings and Jackson Hole: Nvidia is set to report second-quarter results on Wednesday, carrying significant weight for the AI trade and the broader tech sector. Additionally, investors are closely monitoring Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh's upcoming speech at the Jackson Hole symposium for key clues on future monetary policy.
Bullish Scenario and Market Outlook
The market is currently caught in a race between the immense profit promises of technological innovation and the headwinds of high government deficits. Mohamed El-Erian noted that while AI and enterprise technology continue to promise margin expansion, this shift occurs against the backdrop of US Treasury debt just crossing the $40 trillion threshold.
To ease rising debt service burdens, the US Treasury recently doubled its long-term bond buybacks. This move has temporarily lowered long-end yields, though El-Erian noted it is widely viewed as a "Band-Aid." Nevertheless, robust corporate earnings continue to positively impact stocks, buffering portfolios against broader macroeconomic volatility.
How the Previous Prediction Played Out
