USD/JPY extended its modest gains on Wednesday, rising for a third consecutive session, though the upside remained limited, with the pair trading near 159.40. Despite buyers still attempting to maintain control, the 160.00 psychological level has become a focal point of intense contention between bulls and bears, as this level has repeatedly triggered official Japanese intervention in the past, keeping markets on high alert.
**Intervention Risk Weighs on Bullish Confidence**
The 160.00 line is viewed by the market as a key intervention warning zone. Although Japanese authorities have never publicly defined a clear defense line, historical experience shows that when the exchange rate approaches this level, officials have issued strong warnings or even directly intervened by selling dollars to support the yen. According to market reports, such intervention actions often come swiftly, with USD/JPY frequently dropping several hundred pips within hours. However, it is worth noting that the pullback magnitude triggered by recent interventions has been gradually narrowing, with the 158.60-158.90 region on the downside potentially serving as the first support. If this area is breached, 155.00 could come back into focus.
**Fundamentals Still Support Dollar Strength**
Despite the elevated intervention risk, dollar buying remains solid. Relatively higher U.S. interest rates and a clear yield advantage over Japan continue to attract capital inflows, keeping the rebound trend in USD/JPY since the May low intact. According to technical analysts, weekly momentum has risen to its highest level since January this year, with prices rising in seven of the past eight weeks, indicating that bulls still hold the upper hand. Markets are closely watching the upcoming speech by Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda for clues on policymakers' assessment of recent yen weakness.
**Technical Focus on Key Resistance Breakout**
From a technical chart perspective, USD/JPY has extended its gains after breaking out of the June consolidation range, but is now approaching a significant resistance band. According to analysts, if the pair can effectively break and close above 160.74, it may trigger a new round of accelerated upside, with subsequent targets pointing toward 163.33 and even the 164.00 region. Conversely, if intervention risk materializes or upside momentum fades, the pair could retest support near 158.60.
