USD/JPY edged lower on Wednesday, trading near 159.06 after briefly approaching the 159.00 level. Asian currencies broadly strengthened, providing support for the yen, while the dollar failed to extend the previous session's rebound momentum, leaving the pair repeatedly pressured around the 20-day exponential moving average.
**BoJ Rate Hike Expectations Intensify**
Market participants firmly anticipate that the Bank of Japan will raise its policy rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% at the September meeting, a key driver behind the yen's recent strength. Meanwhile, rising Japanese government bond yields also underpinned the yen. According to reports, Japan's Ministry of Finance stated it would consider adjusting the composition of its bond issuance plan, potentially involving cuts to super-long-term bond sales, which pushed the 10-year JGB yield near 1.52%.
**Technical Outlook: 20-Day MA Forms Key Resistance**
On the technical front, USD/JPY struggles around the 20-day exponential moving average, indicating an unclear short-term trend. The 14-day relative strength index fluctuates within the 40-60 range, suggesting a sideways consolidation pattern. Should the pair break above the prior eight-week high of 148.65, upside targets would point toward the 150.00 psychological level and the March 28 high of 151.21; conversely, a break below the May 7 low of 142.42 would heighten downside risks, with subsequent support seen at the April 22 low of 139.90.
**Dollar Lacks Rebound Momentum**
The dollar index retreated from its earlier intraday high of 99.85, stabilizing around 99.50. Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump's remarks that the European Union is stepping up trade negotiation efforts briefly boosted the dollar, but this momentum failed to persist. In the absence of fresh positive catalysts, the dollar struggles to achieve a meaningful breakout against the yen, making resistance near the 20-day MA more pronounced.
