USD/JPY is trading around 158.41, maintaining an overall range-bound pattern. Following the release of the US midterm election results, the pair dipped about 0.20% but later trimmed some losses, indicating underlying support remains intact.
**Technical Outlook: Awaiting Direction Between Moving Averages**
On the daily chart, USD/JPY remains sandwiched between the 50-day and 200-day simple moving averages, located near 157.39 and 158.62, respectively. According to market technical analysis, the pair appears to be forming a bullish "pin bar" pattern, suggesting buyers still have the intention to push higher, but the resistance wall near the 200-day SMA has yet to be decisively breached. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovers around the mid-50s, while the MACD remains in positive territory, with momentum slightly constructive but insufficient to confirm a breakout.
**Key Levels: Dense Resistance Above**
Immediate resistance above sits near the 200-day SMA at 158.62, followed by the late-September high around 159.00, and the September 2 high at 160.39. Initial support below is located near the bottom of the weekly channel at 157.50; a loss of this level could open the door to the late-September low around 156.40, with further support at the September 17 low of 155.34. Until a firm close above the 200-day SMA is achieved, the near-term bias remains pressured.
**Outlook Ahead**
According to FXStreet technical analysis, the dollar appears to need additional momentum to break out of the current range. Market participants suggest that a sustained move above 158.62 could open space toward 159.00 and beyond; conversely, continued rejection may prompt a retest of support at 157.50.
