Cipher Digital Inc shares surged Tuesday, driven mainly by a major narrative shift in its energy strategy. Cipher Digital said Thursday it has begun building lateral pipelines at multiple sites, with the infrastructure designed to overcome grid bottlenecks.

The Nasdaq rose 0.21%, the S&P 500 fell 0.33%, and the tech sector gained 0.61%, despite persistently weak market breadth.

These pipelines will connect company facilities to nearby natural gas supplies. The infrastructure can support up to 2.5 gigawatts of on-site power generation.

Data Center Expansion

Cipher Digital plans to use this capacity to build industrial-scale data centers and lease them to large tenants. These facilities will support high-performance computing workloads.

The company will work with power suppliers to develop the necessary generation infrastructure. Cipher Digital targets having power available by the end of 2027.

Technical Analysis

From a trend perspective, CIFR remains in a long-term uptrend after a strong 151.68% rally over 12 months, but the chart has been undergoing a mid-cycle correction since its June high. The stock currently trades 16.8% above its 20-day moving average and 5.5% above its 200-day moving average, but remains 6.2% below its 100-day moving average, keeping the medium-term trend in a "repair" phase rather than fully clear.

The moving average structure is mixed, which helps explain the choppy price action: the 20-day average remains below the 50-day average, while the 50-day average sits above the 200-day average. This combination typically produces sharp rallies and pullbacks as price attempts to reclaim the middle of the trend range.

Key resistance: $22.50 — a nearby round-number zone where rallies could stall, as traders tend to sell into strength.

Key support: $16 — a nearby area where buyers have previously stepped in, consistent with the recent consolidation range above the 20-day moving average.

CIFR price action: As of Tuesday's close, Cipher Digital shares were up 9.36% at $19.40.
