Y Combinator CEO: "No Action Needed" on Chinese Distillation of US AI Models

September 11, according to CNBC, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan said at YC's annual Demo Day that regarding the distillation of OpenAI and Anthropic models by Chinese companies (including DeepSeek, Moonshot AI, MiniMax, etc.), he chooses to "do nothing" and suggests regulators instead focus on maintaining the commercial balance between open-weight models and frontier models.

Tan also holds reservations about AI doomsday theories, believing that cybersecurity is the most pressing risk at present, while AI-induced employment disruption and economic transformation will take decades to truly permeate society.
