USD/JPY is currently trading near 158.98039, with the market still digesting the impact of the previous joint U.S.-Japan intervention. In the latest assessment, Jane Foley, Senior FX Strategist at Rabobank, noted that if Japanese authorities intervene during a phase of dollar weakness, they could achieve greater exchange rate impact at a lower cost, a strategic choice reflecting official vigilance against disorderly currency moves. The intervention aims to curb excessive yen depreciation, but in terms of actual effect, it has served more to smooth volatility than to reverse the trend.

Ripple effects of intervention and fiscal concerns. According to Rabobank's analysis, the communication approach of this intervention has sparked market speculation that Japan might sell U.S. Treasuries to raise dollar funds, which weighs on U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar's trajectory. The institution believes this concern essentially reflects a long-standing fiscal issue for the yen—Japan's reliance on external financing imposes structural constraints in its currency battles. Although the joint intervention received U.S. support, it has not fundamentally altered the drivers of the yen's undervaluation.

Mid-term range trading rather than trend reversal. In its current report, Rabobank indicates that over the next 3 to 6 months, USD/JPY is likely to stabilize within a range of 158 to 157, contrasting with market worries of a near-term return to 160. This assessment is based on two premises: first, the Bank of Japan may adopt a more hawkish monetary policy stance, and second, the potential deterrent of further FX intervention. However, the bank also cautions that while the dollar shows signs of cyclical recovery, a long-term structural decline remains possible, which could indirectly affect the yen's relative performance.
