a16z announced on October 22 that it has removed "Crypto" from the name of its flagship blockchain fund, renaming it a16z Frontier, with long-time general partner Ali Yahya stepping down. The news stated that this move is not an abandonment of cryptocurrency investments, but rather aims to further broaden its investment scope.

The fund has raised nearly $10 billion in total to date, including $4.5 billion in 2022 and $2.2 billion for Fund 5 this year, making it one of the largest institutions in the industry. When raising Fund 5 this year, a16z stated that the industry is shifting from a price cycle to a usage cycle, with a focus on the implementation of infrastructure such as stablecoins, on-chain finance, prediction markets, and asset tokenization, rather than merely chasing market trends.

a16z crypto founder and managing partner Chris Dixon remains in his role. Crypto asset and blockchain-related investments remain a core focus, but the overall branding and strategic emphasis have been adjusted to cover a broader range of frontier technology sectors.
