Galaxy: Coldcard Hacker Event Saw 1,789 BTC Stolen, 87% of Funds Yet to Be Moved

On August 25, according to Cointelegraph, the latest statistics from Galaxy Research show that the Coldcard hacker event involved 8,865 addresses, with a total of 1,789.28 bitcoins stolen, valued at approximately $114.7 million at the time of the theft. 1,561 bitcoins, or about 87.3% of the stolen funds, have not yet been transferred and remain in aggregation or holding addresses controlled by the attacker. Galaxy's head of research, Alex Thorn, stated that some of the later-stolen funds have been obfuscated through methods such as CoinJoin transactions and peeling chains.

The statistics also include 221 victim reports, involving losses of 790.72 bitcoins, accounting for 44.2% of Galaxy's attributed total losses; the median reported loss was 1.04272 bitcoins, meaning over half of the victims lost more than 1 bitcoin. Galaxy has provided the relevant attacker addresses to cryptocurrency exchanges, compliance firms, and law enforcement agencies to enable freezing measures when funds flow into centralized institutions.
