Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities Fund shares fell in Thursday afternoon trading after research firm The Bear Cave published a short report. Here's what investors need to know.

Guggenheim Strategic Fund shares test the downside boundary. What's weighing on GOF?

The "Magic Money Machine" Falters

The Bear Cave claims that GOF's long-standing dividend yield is built on an unsustainable issuance model. Over the past eight fiscal years, the fund distributed $1.74 billion to shareholders while its portfolio generated only $564 million in total returns.

To bridge the gap, Bear Cave alleges that GOF relied on issuing billions of dollars in new common shares while trading at a premium to net asset value. With the premium now compressing to a discount, statutory safeguards limit GOF from selling new shares to cover its distributions.

Guggenheim did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Alleged Illiquid Assets and Distribution Risks

The report also raised concerns about the quality of the fund's underlying portfolio, citing a former executive who described the holdings as illiquid and difficult to adjust during redemptions. The report noted that approximately 15.5% of the fund's net assets sit in Level 3 securities, which Bear Cave says rely on unobservable inputs and internal valuation models.

According to the analysis, GOF's recurring net investment income supports a monthly distribution of about 6 cents per share, far below its current 18.21-cent distribution. Without new capital from share sales, fund managers may be forced to cut dividends or attempt asset sales.

GOF Shares Fall in Thursday Afternoon Trading

GOF price action: Guggenheim Strategic Opportunities Fund shares fell 5.65% to $9.52 at the time of writing on Thursday. The stock is trading at a new 52-week low, marking its lowest level since data from 2009.
