Intel Corp. is increasing its investment in advanced chip packaging, attempting to challenge Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s dominance in the rapidly growing AI hardware market, where demand for more efficient connections between processors and memory is rising.
Counterpoint Research analyst Neil Shah believes Intel's chip packaging strategy could be a way to challenge TSMC's position in the fast-growing AI hardware market, though he noted Intel still needs strong execution, customer support, and manufacturing scale to close the gap.
Intel Targets New AI Battlefield
Shah said Tuesday he expects more than 130 million GPUs and custom AI accelerators to ship with advanced memory packaging technology over the next five years, generating nearly $2 trillion in computing revenue.
In his view, the focus of competition is shifting from simply manufacturing smaller chips to finding better ways to connect processors, memory, and other components.
This shift matters because AI systems require faster memory access, greater computing power, and more efficient connections.
Shah believes these constraints create opportunities for companies to improve how different parts of AI systems work together.
Intel Develops Alternatives to TSMC
Intel is developing three approaches to compete in this area.
Its EMIB technology is already commercially operational, while the Z-Angle Memory co-developed with SoftBank Group Corp's SAIMEMORY targets newer high-speed memory systems.
Intel is also developing Cross-Batch Memory as a long-term solution to redesign the connection between processors and memory.
Shah sees an opportunity because TSMC's widely used wafer-level chip stacking technology may involve high costs, manufacturing risks, capacity constraints, and significant waste when production issues occur.
TSMC Maintains Its Advantage
Despite Intel's opportunity, Shah said TSMC retains a stronger position due to its leadership in large-scale manufacturing, more mature technology platforms, and broad industry adoption.
Therefore, whether Intel can mount a serious challenge will depend on whether it can deliver its technology on time, attract major customers and memory suppliers, and overcome thermal and integration challenges.
Shah's broader view is that as AI systems increasingly require tight integration between processors and memory, packaging will become an increasingly important battleground in the competitive landscape.
