IRS Warns Crypto Holders Not to Scan QR Codes on Fake Letters

Bitcoin News posted on X platform that the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds cryptocurrency holders that they may recently receive counterfeit official-looking letters mailed by scammers, which direct recipients to a fake "Digital Asset Compliance Portal." The letters contain QR codes that, when scanned, redirect to a fraudulent IRS website that may request personal information, wallet details, exchange account credentials, or other sensitive data. The IRS stated that it does not operate a platform called "Digital Asset Compliance Portal" and did not send these letters. According to reports, Coinbase and DarkTower have traced the infrastructure behind this activity to a recently registered domain hosted in Romania. If such letters are received, do not scan the QR codes or provide any information.
