Samsung Electronics is accelerating its expansion of advanced wafer production capacity in the US, with plans to break ground on the second phase of its Taylor, Texas fab by the end of this year, targeting mass production by 2030. The company has asked key equipment partners to obtain SEMI certification in advance to facilitate subsequent equipment import and export. SEMI certification, a standard for evaluating the safety of semiconductor equipment, is typically a necessary procedure before equipment can be shipped overseas.
The Taylor fab is tasked with Samsung's most advanced foundry mass production. Phase one is currently undergoing equipment delivery and installation, with the goal of commencing production by the end of this year, with 2-nanometer as the primary mass production process node, and Tesla is seen as a key customer. Samsung stated during its Q2 earnings call that in response to growing customer demand, construction of Taylor Phase Two will begin by the end of this year. Industry sources say the specifications for Phase Two have yet to be finalized, and the pace of mass production will depend on the expansion of supplies to Tesla and progress with new major clients. Separately, sources say Samsung E&A is considering dispatching dozens of construction workers to the site.
