SK Hynix Plans Semiconductor Plant in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan with Investment Worth Tens of Trillions of Won

According to a report by Infomax under Yonhap News Agency, SK Hynix is pushing forward with plans to build a semiconductor plant in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, with an investment scale reaching tens of trillions of Korean won. SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has recently visited the region in person. Miyagi Prefecture is one of the three major semiconductor industry bases prioritized by the Japanese government.

The report states that the plant serves as an additional overseas production base for SK Hynix beyond its Yongin and Cheongju clusters in South Korea, aiming to address the persistently tight global memory supply-demand situation. If the plan materializes, SK Hynix will become the third foreign semiconductor company to establish operations in Japan, following Micron and TSMC. The report notes that as the U.S. continues to pressure South Korean companies to expand investment in the U.S., this investment in Japan could further intensify U.S. pressure, while Japan's government subsidy policies are also a key consideration. SK Hynix has not yet officially responded to this news. Previously, on August 20, SK Hynix had just announced a 40 trillion won share buyback and cancellation plan.
