US Nonfarm Payrolls Preliminarily Revised Down by 79,000, Labor Market Cooling Continues

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics preliminarily estimates that total nonfarm payrolls were revised down by approximately 79,000 for the year ending March 2026, far smaller than the 862,000 downward revision in 2025, but contrary to market expectations of an upward revision of 183,000. The private sector was revised down by 178,000, while government employment was revised up. The labor market continues to cool but has not shown sharp deterioration, remaining relatively balanced overall. The final revised figures will be released in February 2027.
