What Is RWA Tokenization, and What Actually Counts in TVL?

Tokenized treasury TVL grew fast partly because the definition kept widening. Knowing what each dashboard includes changes the number by billions.

RWA tokenization uses an on-chain token or record to represent a real-world asset or related claim. Whether it genuinely represents the asset depends on legal rights, custody, redemption and verifiable support — not the token name alone.

Real-world asset tokenization is measured by total value locked, but no two trackers draw the boundary in the same place. The gap between the narrowest and broadest definition is routinely a factor of two.

Three boundary questions

  • Does a tokenized money market fund count, or only direct treasury exposure?
  • Are permissioned chains included alongside public ones?
  • Is a wrapper that holds another tokenized fund counted once or twice?

Why it matters for a read

If you compare a broad-definition figure this quarter against a narrow-definition figure last quarter, you will read growth that did not happen. Pin the methodology before you pin the trend, and prefer a single tracker's time series over a cross-tracker comparison.
