Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. shares fell nearly 4% in pre-market trading on Monday. Nasdaq futures were down 0.75%, and S&P 500 futures were down 0.22%.
The Chinese e-commerce giant is supporting its full-stack AI strategy through a record Hong Kong stock offering, signaling a willingness to accept short-term dilution and higher spending to strengthen its position in cloud computing and artificial intelligence.
Alibaba Raises Funds for AI
Alibaba raised HK$80 billion by selling 710 million new shares at HK$112.70 per share. According to a Bloomberg report on Sunday, the company plans to invest all net proceeds into its full-stack AI capabilities, including expanding and upgrading AI infrastructure.
The fundraising comes as Alibaba ramps up capital expenditure and advances its previously announced plan to invest at least 380 billion yuan in cloud computing and AI infrastructure over three years. Its June-quarter capital expenditure rose 75% to 67.7 billion yuan, while profit fell 75%.
UBP Sees Strategic Logic but Questions Equity Financing
Vey-Sern Ling, senior equity advisor at UBP, told CNBC that Alibaba has the advantage of a cloud business and strong AI models to pursue AI growth. He expects short-term profit weakness and rising capital expenditure during Alibaba's investment phase.
However, Ling told Bloomberg that Alibaba's decision to choose equity financing was surprising. He questioned why the company opted for equity over debt financing, suggesting the move may indicate Alibaba needs more AI funding than investors previously expected and wants to move faster than competitors.
Investors Focus on Returns from AI Spending
Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo Markets, told Bloomberg that the equity offering is sizable, though demand from financial institutions and sovereign wealth funds could reduce dilution risk.
She views Alibaba's ability to monetize AI spending as the bigger question, given weak Chinese consumer sentiment and intense AI competition.
Investor Michael Burry took a more cautious stance, arguing that Alibaba's return on invested capital may continue to decline. He also said he no longer plans to rebuild his Alibaba position at current prices.
Alibaba is essentially betting that expanding AI infrastructure today will generate enough future cloud and AI revenue to offset short-term dilution, profit weakness, and higher capital requirements.
