Specialized optical fiber used inside AI data centers is expected to average more than five times its 2025 level in price this year.
That could be good news for Corning Inc., a major manufacturer of fiber optic cables and connectivity equipment. The company has a supply agreement with Meta Platforms Inc. valued at up to $6 billion.
Corning's optical communications business is already booming. Second-quarter sales jumped 32% to $2.07 billion, while the segment's net income surged 77% to $438 million.
But CEO Wendell Weeks said fiber price increases are not the primary driver.
Why the Fiber Price Hike Isn't the Whole Story
TrendForce released new research Monday, forecasting a global fiber optic shortage of 180 million core-kilometers this year, with the shortfall potentially persisting through 2028.
TrendForce estimates industry capacity utilization at 92%, while inventories have fallen to just one month of supply. Expanding production typically takes 18 to 24 months.
As fiber supply tightens, major customers are signing long-term agreements to secure future deliveries.
Corning's agreement with Meta runs through 2030 and covers fiber, cable, and connectivity products. Meta will also serve as the anchor customer for the expansion of Corning's North Carolina cable plant, providing committed demand as the manufacturer ramps up output.
During the July earnings call, Wolfe Research analyst George Notter questioned Weeks about price increases and the company's growing reliance on long-term agreements.
Weeks said: "Pricing is higher, but that's really not how we're driving profitability improvements."
Instead, Weeks credited higher-value connectivity products that help customers build networks faster and at lower cost.
Weeks added that Corning could sell more of its newest products if capacity allowed.
Wall Street Still Bullish Despite Selloff
Despite robust demand for its optical products, Corning's stock has lost about half its market value since hitting an all-time high in June.
UBS raised its Corning price target to $201 earlier this month, maintaining a Buy rating. Citi is more bullish with a $220 target, while Bernstein is more cautious at $140.
On Polymarket, traders are pricing roughly a 28% probability that Corning's third-quarter optical revenue exceeds $2.3 billion, though trading volume is just $3,500.
Meanwhile, another Polymarket market is pricing about a 9% probability that an AI industry downturn reaches contract-specific conditions by year-end, with that market seeing over $3 million in trading volume.
Meta reports earnings on Wednesday, October 21, with Corning following on October 27.
