USD/offshore CNH is currently trading near 6.71752, with the market focused on how trade risks and policy guidance jointly constrain the yuan's appreciation potential. OCBC analysts Shen Moxiong and Huang Junneng noted that reports of potential US tariffs on Chinese goods, coupled with the People's Bank of China's resistance to rapid yuan appreciation, could limit further downside in USD/offshore CNH.

**Trade risks provide upside support**

According to OCBC's analysis, US tariff threats are a key external variable currently suppressing yuan appreciation expectations. If trade frictions escalate, market risk appetite for the yuan could decline, thereby providing support for USD/offshore CNH. Although the recent dollar weakening trend is favorable for the yuan, uncertainty over trade policy limits the scope for further exchange rate declines.

**Midpoint guidance drives orderly appreciation**

Market reports indicate that over the past few weeks, the People's Bank of China has consistently set the daily USD/CNY midpoint below market expectations, signaling an intention to guide a modest yuan strengthening. However, authorities remain committed to a stable and controlled appreciation of the yuan, preventing hasty dollar selling and avoiding sharp price swings. OCBC believes this managed exchange rate decline means authorities are actively curbing excessive volatility, and the trading environment focuses on exploiting controllable trends rather than predicting breakouts.

**Low-volatility environment persists**

USD/CNY options implied volatility has reportedly fallen to near 12-month lows at approximately 3.5%, reflecting market confidence in an orderly policy path. OCBC cautioned that a string of weaker-than-expected midpoint fixes would serve as a key early warning signal of a policy shift. Until then, the pace of yuan appreciation remains dictated by the daily midpoint, and the balance between trade risks and policy guidance will continue to drive USD/offshore CNH volatility dynamics.
