The U.S. dollar index is currently trading around 99.63, with the overall pattern remaining a tug-of-war between bulls and bears. Elias Haddad, an analyst at Brown Brothers Harriman, believes that the market's repricing of a dovish shift by the Federal Reserve is limiting the dollar's upside, while strong overseas demand is providing support, making it difficult for the currency to establish a one-sided trend.

**Dovish Expectations Cap Upside**

The market is closely watching the impact of U.S. inflation data on the Fed's policy path. If CPI comes in weak, it could reinforce the case for dovish repricing, further undermining the dollar and boosting risk assets. Earlier, the market expected core CPI to rise 0.2% month-over-month, higher than the 0.0% in June; year-over-year, it is forecast to slow to 2.5% from 2.6% in June. This expectation of cooling inflation leaves the dollar lacking momentum for sustained strength.

**Inflows Provide Support**

Despite pressure from dovish expectations, overseas demand for dollar assets remains robust, limiting the dollar's downside. Haddad stressed that the interplay between strong overseas demand and dovish Fed repricing leaves the dollar's backdrop mixed. The dollar index was previously reported at 99.54, with EUR/USD trading around 1.157, indicating that the market has not formed a strong one-way bet.

**Near-Term Focus on Inflation Data**

Going forward, U.S. CPI data will be a key variable. If the data comes in weak, dovish repricing could intensify, potentially exposing the dollar to fresh downside pressure; if the data shows resilience, it could temper dovish expectations and offer the dollar a rebound opportunity. Until then, the dollar is likely to remain in a range-bound, choppy pattern.
