HSBC: Starlink Users Surpass 12 Million, Space Race Boosts Earth Industries in Three Ways

HSBC released a report on August 18 covering 12 industries, noting that SpaceX's Starlink has crossed the scaling tipping point: as of June 30, it had 10,200 in-orbit satellites and 12 million broadband users, spanning 167 markets; additionally, 7.4 million monthly active devices connect via satellite direct-to-cell, covering 30 countries. Maersk has installed Starlink on over 330 container ships, and United Airlines plans to equip 15 Boeing 737-800s per month. Starship aims to cut launch costs to $100–$300 per kilogram, a decline of over 95% from historical averages.

HSBC assesses that the space race is boosting Earth industries in three ways: in communications, Starlink primarily complements terrestrial telecom operators, filling coverage gaps in oceans, deserts, and post-disaster scenarios; in computing, orbital data center costs are currently about 3 times those on the ground, serving as strategic reserves, but Terafab's vertically integrated wafer fab could disrupt the semiconductor industry division of labor if successful; in energy, AI data centers have pushed U.S. electricity demand growth to 4%–5% annually, with renewables and the grid as the biggest beneficiaries. The report notes that the power, semiconductor, and robotics sectors are being directly reshaped.
