Mastermind of $240M BTC Theft Malone Lam to Attend Plea Deal Hearing This Tuesday

A young crypto fraud ring stole over 4,100 BTC in August 2024 via a "social engineering" attack, valued at over $240 million at the time. After the heist, ring members quickly embarked on lavish spending, including buying sports cars, renting luxury mansions, flying on private jets, and hiring security personnel. Malone Lam, the alleged mastermind, a 22-year-old Singaporean man, reportedly spent over $569,000 in a single night at a Los Angeles nightclub. The investigation revealed that suspects impersonated Google and crypto exchange Gemini staff to trick the victim into handing over Google Drive access and security verification codes, thereby transferring away their Bitcoin. They then moved funds through multiple exchanges and money laundering intermediaries. The extravagant lifestyle eventually drew law enforcement attention. One suspect exposed his IP address while hiding nearly $30 million in stolen crypto assets, leading police to trace him to a rented California mansion. Another suspect was found with $37 million in stolen crypto assets. Lam is accused of using stolen funds to buy $2 million worth of watches and over 30 Porsches, Lamborghinis, and Ferraris. To date, 18 defendants have been indicted, and Lam is expected to attend a plea deal hearing this Tuesday. The U.S. Department of Justice has already sentenced several co-conspirators, and the case remains ongoing.
