Silver (XAG/USD) traded near $54.20 on Wednesday, extending its pressured pattern within a descending channel. Market focus is on the upcoming Federal Reserve monetary policy statement, with both bulls and bears refraining from placing bets before the major risk event, keeping intraday volatility limited.

**Fed Decision Becomes Key Short-Term Variable**

Current market expectations for the Fed's policy path have become the most critical variable driving silver's short-term direction. The linkage between the U.S. dollar index and real yields is directly pressuring silver, a zero-yield asset. Reports indicate that recent silver price action has shifted from industry-driven factors back to Fed policy and dollar-driven logic. If the meeting signals patience on easing, the dollar could see temporary strength fade, offering silver a breathing window; conversely, a hawkish stance would expose silver to renewed downside pressure.

**Speculative Positioning and Physical Inventories Diverge**

Positioning data shows speculative net long positions in silver have been sharply reduced, while short positions have climbed to a more than one-year high, reflecting deteriorating market sentiment. However, the physical side is sending a different signal. Goldman Sachs strategists earlier warned that tariff concerns have driven large volumes of silver to be shipped into the U.S. ahead of schedule, tightening available inventories abroad and widening the New York-London arbitrage spread. The last time a similar speculative "washout" structure occurred, silver rallied 15% over the following six weeks. Analysts suggest that if the dollar and real yields do not climb further, silver could see a corrective rebound without needing additional bullish catalysts.

**Growing Divergence in Medium-to-Long-Term Forecasts, Focus on Structural Demand Shifts**

Institutional views on silver's medium-to-long-term outlook are also diverging. LiteFinance's technical model projects silver could reach a range of $54.897 to $62.760 by 2027. In contrast, UBS has sharply cut its target price, lowering its forecast for end-Q2 2026 from $100 to $85, citing high silver prices suppressing solar and jewelry demand, while increased mine supply will narrow the supply deficit. The long-term trend will deeply depend on the interplay between global industrial demand momentum and central bank monetary policy; until macro uncertainty subsides, silver's range-bound or tug-of-war pattern between bulls and bears may prove difficult to break.
