Xiaomi Unveils Self-Developed Autonomous Driving Chip, Vies with NIO on Tesla's Turf

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi Group has launched its self-developed autonomous driving chip, which will be deployed for commercial use in 2027.

Xiaomi Adopts 3nm Process

According to CnEVPost's Monday report, Xiaomi stated that the Xring D100 will adopt a 3nm process, featuring a 20-core CPU and a 16-core NPU.

The company also said it will run a large language model with 200 billion parameters locally. The report noted that Xiaomi's electric vehicles currently primarily rely on NVIDIA Corporation's Thor chip to support its intelligent driving system.

Notably, William Li, CEO of Chinese automaker NIO, had earlier touted the company's self-developed chip design and autonomous driving efforts, claiming they would be more cost-effective than competitors.

On the other hand, XPeng Motors has also unveiled a roadmap to achieve Level 4 autonomous driving by 2028, with its Mona L03 crossover SUV equipped with upgraded technology.

Tesla Promotes Terafab

Meanwhile, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has touted that the EV giant will have its own semiconductor manufacturing plant, which will develop chips using a 2nm process without the need for cleanrooms. Months later, Musk unveiled the Terafab facility in Grimes County, Texas, which could become the largest building ever constructed.

However, Terafab's chip work may be more targeted at SpaceX rather than Tesla, as Musk indicated that SpaceX will consume three times the AI computing power of Terafab compared to Tesla.

Nevertheless, critics have questioned Tesla's autonomous driving efforts, with investor Ross Gerber stating he sees no way the current HW4/AI4 chip can support fully autonomous driving technology.
