USD/JPY rebounded sharply on Friday, snapping a two-session losing streak, and was trading near 158.23. Stronger-than-expected US nonfarm payrolls data served as the key catalyst, reinforcing market expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain its hawkish policy stance and refocusing attention on the dollar's significant yield advantage over the yen.

**Nonfarm Payrolls Beat Expectations, Dampening Rate-Cut Bets**

The latest US employment report came in solid, suggesting that the cooling trend in the labor market may be moderating. The result directly weighed on market expectations for a near-term Fed pivot toward easing. According to the CME FedWatch model, as of end-2026, the market still assigns a probability of over 45% that the Fed will keep its current benchmark rate of 3.75% unchanged. The resilience of the jobs data provides the Fed more room to stay focused on its 2% inflation target, implying that higher rates could persist for longer, thereby boosting the appeal of dollar-denominated assets.

**US-Japan Rate Gap Continues to Weigh on the Yen**

In the current environment, the wide US-Japan rate differential remains the core factor driving dollar strength over the yen. At present, the US benchmark rate stands at 3.75%, while Japan's is only 0.75%, leaving a significant rate advantage between the two. Although stronger Japanese inflation data has reinforced expectations that the Bank of Japan may continue to hike rates in the coming months, its level of rates is still unlikely to catch up with the US in the short term. This divergence in policy outlook keeps the yen under sustained pressure from dollar buying, with little clear momentum for a rebound.

**Dollar's Technical Rebound Makes Yen Recovery Harder**

Earlier, USD/JPY touched an intraday low of 157.26 but quickly rebounded following the strong data release. Market participants believe that as long as incoming economic data continues to support the Fed's hawkish stance, USD/JPY may maintain a slow but steady uptrend in the medium term. Even if future data turns soft, the more likely scenario is that the pair enters a consolidation phase rather than a broad decline, making a sustained yen rebound increasingly difficult.
