Micron Technology and SanDisk shares jumped on Monday, as investors returned to the memory chip sector after last week's sharp selloff.

The rally came as tech stocks led a broader market rebound. The Nasdaq rose 1.04%, while the S&P 500 gained 0.41%. The technology sector was up 1.30%.

Investors Return After Sharp Selloff

Micron and SanDisk faced heavy selling pressure last week, as investors questioned the sustainability of the AI-driven memory chip boom.

Concerns over Chinese competition, rising financing costs, and the outlook for AI infrastructure spending drove both stocks sharply lower.

However, Monday's rebound suggests some investors view the pullback as a buying opportunity.

Falling oil prices and a broader tech rally also supported market sentiment.

Concerns Over Chinese Competition Ease

Concerns surrounding CXMT's technology also showed signs of easing.

The Chinese chipmaker recently announced progress in memory technology, sparking worries that it could eventually challenge incumbent suppliers.

However, analysts questioned whether the technology can achieve scaled commercial production.

That uncertainty has helped ease fears of a direct competitive threat, though China's expanding memory industry remains a long-term risk.

AI Demand Supports Memory Outlook

Meanwhile, investors are refocusing on strong demand for memory products used in AI data centers.

Micron is benefiting from tight supply of high-bandwidth memory, which is used to support advanced AI processors.

SanDisk, meanwhile, stands to benefit from enterprise demand for solid-state drives, as AI applications generate ever-larger volumes of data.

Roundhill Investments CEO Dave Mazza recently said AI demand is pushing memory suppliers toward longer-term customer agreements, improving revenue visibility.

He also noted that memory supply is effectively locked in through 2026 and into 2027, even as rising interest rates and Chinese competitive pressures weighed on investor sentiment.

Bernstein Sees Buying Opportunity

Bernstein analyst Mark Newman also remains optimistic on the sector following the recent pullback.

Newman recently said demand for DRAM, NAND flash, and hard disk drives remains "extremely strong."

However, he warned that memory chip price increases are no longer accelerating, suggesting some of the industry's pricing momentum may be slowing.

That outlook highlights the key challenge facing memory chip stocks. While AI demand continues to support growth, investors must weigh growth drivers against slowing price gains and the possibility of intensifying competition.

Despite last week's decline, Micron shares are still up nearly 220% in 2026, while SanDisk has surged roughly 490%.

Key ETFs

Investors can also gain exposure to the memory sector through exchange-traded funds.

The Roundhill Memory ETF and Tema Memory ETF both hold Micron and SanDisk, offering broader exposure to memory companies.

Price action: As of Monday's writing, SanDisk shares were up 7.56% at $1,397.55; Micron Technology shares were up 5.13% at $923.93.
